Cybersecurity Firm Sophos Released The State Of Ransomware 2021 Report

Global cybersecurity firm Sophos has published the State of Ransomware 2021 report. According to the report, 68% of Indian organizations were affected by ransomware in the last 12 months.

The State Of Ransomware 2021

India is one of the most affected countries in terms of ransomware attacks. India tops the list of top 30 countries for ransomware attacks. In the last 12 months, 68 per cent of Indian organizations have been hit by ransomware. However, this number is lower than the 82 percent reported in the 2020 report. The data, believed to be from 72 per cent Indian organizations, was encrypted in the most significant ransomware attack. However, the attacks have decreased. In some places the behavior of the attacker has changed.

In Sophos, it is reported that the attackers turned to more targeted attacks involving human keyboard hacking, in order to bypass the organization's security. In contrast to the global average of 32 per cent, 67 per cent of Indian organizations whose data was encrypted paid a ransom. Eighty-six per cent of Indian organizations believe that cyber attacks are so complex that it is difficult for their own IT team to manage them.

The Effect Of The Attack

Ransomware attacks have a significant financial impact. The survey revealed that the average total cost of recovery from a rinsomware attack more than doubled in one year. It increased from 7,61,106 in 2020 to 1.85 million worldwide in 2021. However, in India, recovery costs have tripled in one year, from 1.1 million in 2020 to 3.38 million in 2021.
