324 Crore Investment For Lab Testing Infrastructure

 42 Virology Research and Diagnostic Laboratories will be set up by the Central Government. It will be set up under the central plan during the period 2021-22 to 2025-26. The project will cost Rs 324 crore. The scheme comes under the Health Research Department (DHR) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The primary objective of the scheme is to help promote timely detection and diagnosis coverage of the virus during an epidemic outbreak.


The plan will also focus on increasing data generation on all viral diseases so that resources can be deployed quickly and steps can be taken to save human lives. The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) approved the scheme in 2013 at an estimated cost of Rs 646.83 crore. The Standing Finance Committee approved the scheme in 2017 with an estimated expenditure of Rs 488.5 crore for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

The scheme was extended for one year till March 31, 2021. The plan was approved at a recent meeting of the Standing Finance Committee in March 2021.

Target Of This Scheme :

Initially, the scheme aimed to set up a three-tier network of 160 laboratories, which was divided into 30 state-level laboratories, 10 regional-level laboratories and 120 medical college laboratories. Later, the target was reduced to 125 viral research and clinical laboratories, which were divided into 25 state-level laboratories, 10 regional laboratories and 90 medical college-level laboratories. As on March 31, 2021, a network of 124 VRDLs has been established.
